Guardian Training Class Reprinted December 1999 People often inquire about becoming a professional guardian. In order to become a guardian, you must take a 40 hour training seminar. The only exceptions are when someone acts as guardian for a family member and that is the only case they have. Irene Rausch, a long time guardian in Pinellas County is offering her class on four consecutive Saturdays in January, starting on the 8th from 8 AM to 5:30 in Palm Harbor. Call her for more details at 784-4200 or for future class dates. Irene’s classes will prepare you as well as you can be. Being a guardian is a huge responsibility especially if you are guardian of both the person and the property. There are annual reports that report to the court accounting for every penny spent as well as making decisions about health care, living environment, etc. Many years ago I was guardian of the person only for a long time client. I found it was sometimes harder making decisions for her than for myself. You do lots of soul searching, what’s best for this person. I’m not sorry I did it but I’m not sure I’d do it again without giving it much thought. |
