Martindale-Hubbell Rating

Reprinted December 2000

Martindale-Hubbell is an attorney rating system has been in existence for over 130 years. It’s a source of information on attorneys throughout the United States, Canada and the world. You might wonder, what’s the purpose of this? When an attorney needs an attorney in another part of the country where he knows no one, he or she most likely will check Martindale-Hubbell to find an attorney in that part of the country. Martindale-Hubbell can be found in public libraries, law libraries and of course in many attorneys’ offices. Just as many other publications, it’s now on CD.

Martindale-Hubbell is the facilitator of a peer review process. Ratings reflect the confidential opinions of members of the Bar and the Judiciary. Martindale-Hubbell ratings fall into two categories - legal ability and general ethical standards. Legal Ability Ratings are:

C - Good to High

B - High to Very High

A - Very high to Premium

There is one general ethical standard rating - "V" or "very high" and an attorney must receive it in order to be rated. Ray has the AV rating, and it can’t get better than that!

P.S. Particularly in the area of elder law, if you know someone searching for an attorney to assist them in another state, Ray has not only Martindale-Hubbell as a resource but also has his NAELA (National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys) Directory. We’ll do our best to assist that person in finding an attorney
